Five myths about people who travel

What are some of the myths and misconceptions associated with people who travel or have an urge to travel? Are they wealthy, extroverts, or show-offs? Today I have listed five common myths about travelers, feel free to add yours in the comments section.

Myth 1: All travelers are rich

This is probably the biggest myth ever. While there are very wealthy travelers, this is not the case for everyone. Just because someone travels fairly often does not mean they have foreign accounts and trust funds splashed across all the continents of the world. Keep in mind that people spend their money on what they consider valuable to them so judging someone’s spending pattern solely based on yours is not a very good way of looking at things.

Myth 2: All travelers are extroverts

To assume that all travelers are extroverts is simply just generalizing. Stop, we are not all extroverts. I understand that traveling is quite an extroverted activity- going out, meeting people, blending in, and seeking adventure but that is not always the case. I consider myself an introvert (well, for the most part.) and I always laugh when I get back from my travels and someone invites me to a party and I say I am not feeling like it and they are confused because I love traveling and “going out”. Partying and Traveling are not quite the same thing and I just wish people will understand this.

Partying and traveling are not quite the same thing.

Myth 3: All travelers are story tellers

Not all travelers are story tellers. I do not typically relive my travel experiences by talking about it to people, face to face.Thankfully I have a blog now that allows me to share for the love of writing but I do not always talk about it. I think a lot of people find that weird. You get back and they expect you to give them a detailed recap of your experiences, not always the case. I just might but I am sorry, that is an expectation I cannot always live up to. Most times, I relive my experiences through looking back at pictures and all the untold stories in my head not by speaking about it to other people. Do you understand? 🙂

Myth 4: Travelers are insightful, all the time

Let me be honest, if you are traveling a certain way, there are major eye openers and lessons that can be picked up. It can teach you so many things you probably wouldn’t have learned otherwise so I definitely understand the expectation being there. It’s just funny how people meet me and expect that I am always spitting wisdom, dropping deep quotes, discussing global insights. Hello? Just because I have gone and stared at the Eiffel Tower for five minutes does not mean I now have a solution to world peace. Can I please catch a break here? Please?

Myth 5: Travelers are show-offs

This one I find a bit funny. People share all sorts on their Social Media and at the end of the day, it is a small reflection of their lives and interests. Let’s all be happy and share what we want, okay? If you can share a picture of your lunch, a picture of your favorite football player or a mirror selfie about your outfit of the day, why can I not share a picture of a new city I just discovered? Why is that considered show- off? We are both sharing pictures of our daily living, our current realities, why is this so entirely different?

We are both sharing pictures of our current realities, why is a travel picture so different?

So guys, that’s all I can come up with right now but I want to hear from you. Can you relate? What misconceptions do people have about you because you travel? Or on the flip side, what opinion do you have of people who travel? Let me know in the comments.

  1. Spot on! I like to travel as well and I have been to a few places. I just got back from Long Island, nice weather there, you should consider going too.

Everything you touched on is true but to add, one big myth about me especially with close family and friends is that I am irresponsible with my finances because I travel. I think they need to read this. “PEOPLE SPEND THEIR MONEY ON WHAT THEY CONSIDER OF VALUE”. You couldn’t have said it any better. I would not buy a pair of Christian Louboutin shoes because I do not see it as value but someone else will. Let’s respect people’s spending choices. Great piece there!

    1. Samara, this is me too. I get the silent (and sometimes, not-so-silent) disapproval for ‘wasting’ all my money traveling. But I don’t think much of it. Many years down the line, when I look back at all my adventures, I will be glad I took the chance while I could.

    2. Ahhhh! Absolutely spot on! I can definitely relate to this and it should be on the list somewhere. Thanks for contributing and sharing on here, Samara!
