Steal my Itinerary: 9 Super Cool Things I did in Kenya

This year, I had a goal to visit a few more African countries and Kenya was one of them. I’ve always been fascinated about Kenyan culture; it seemed rich and different from the outside and after exploring it, I can wholeheartedly confirm that it is indeed a rich one.

With only five full days to spare, I knew I had to make the best of my time in Kenya. There were several other things I could have done in Kenya but I narrowed it down to a few. Here are 9 super cool things I did in Kenya. Feel free to Steal my Itinerary.

1.) A Safari Tour in Maasai Mara

Probably the coolest thing I did in Kenya was to go on an epic safari tour in Maasai Mara National Park. It was an unreal experience seeing animals like Lions, Zebras, Giraffes, Cheetahs up close and personal. Definitely a highlight of my trip to Kenya.

2.) Visited a Maasai Village

Another cool thing I did was visit a Maasai Village and learn about the culture and people of the Maasai tribe. I had the opportunity to have intimate conversations with the Maasais and we exchanged stories about Kenya and life in general. They also put on a show for us and jumped, lit up fires with their mouths and danced around. It was all so much fun to watch and experience.

3.) Explored the Giraffe Center in Nairobi

The Giraffe Center is on the list of must-do activities while in Nairobi City so it didn’t take a lot of convincing to stop by and indulge. I got to feed a giraffe called Salma with pellets that we were given on entrance. I have never fed or seen giraffes that close so I was very giddy with excitement.

4.) Visited an Elephant Orphanage

I think by now my love for animals is very apparent. I typically wouldn’t pass up an opportunity to see and experience animals and Elephant Orphanage in Nairobi was on my radar. I particularly liked this experience because the David Sheldrick Orphanage home were responsible for taking care of and rescuing endangered Elephant orphans. I knew the entry fee was going towards an elephant in need so it was a worthy way to spend my money. I also adopted a baby elephant which I am really proud of. Overall, a great experience.

5.) Experienced the nightlife in Nairobi

Before my trip to Kenya, I had heard about the nightlife in Nairobi being really top-notch but I didn’t fully comprehend it until I got there – it is phenomenal. It was a short stay for me but I tried to experience the nightlife as much as possible. The people, the live bands, the ambience, the vibes, all made it super awesome.

6.) Shopped in the Maasai Market

Another really cool thing I did in Kenya was go on a shopping spree in a local Maasai Market. I was impressed with the variety of handmade goods on display and they were not only beautiful, they were also affordable. The market was bursting with energy, there were live performances and the sellers were very welcoming and accommodating. It was a good shopping experience.

7.) Tried Nairobi Restaurants

There are several restaurants in Nairobi and I wish time had permitted me to indulge as much as I had liked. However, I did get to visit CJ’s for breakfast – they had a great selection of continental breakfast options and ArtCaffe – I tried their pasta and it was amazing, it had a great ambience too. I also visited About Thyme which had a vegetation type setting that I quite enjoyed. Ambience and food was 10/10.

8.) Camped in Maasai Mara

Ah what an experience camping out in Maasai Mara. The camp came as a complimentary add-on to the Safari adventure booked. The space was neat and had the basic amenities necessary to survive a short stay. We also had complimentary breakfast and dinner which was passable. There was no internet and stable electricity but I was only there for a night and that made it manageable. In general, a great experience.

9. Visited the famous Carnivore Restaurant

As a meat lover, I had the opportunity of dining at the famous Carnivore restaurant in Nairobi. If you’ve never heard about Carnivore, I do not blame you – I hadn’t either. A friend suggested a visit and it definitely did not disappoint. I tried all kinds of meat on the menu from ostrich to crocodile to rabbit, you name it! The service and delivery of the food was top-notch as it is served on a hot plate at your table. Seeing as it was a buffet, you get to eat as much as you wanted. There was also a flag at each table which you can put down to indicate your stomach had had enough. Overall, it was a new food experience for me and I will totally recommend this place if you’re ever in Nairobi.

Thank you for reading about some of the cool things I did in Kenya. I hope you steal my itinerary and use it to plan your trip to Kenya. Kenya has so much more to offer – I hope to explore Mombasa and Lamu the next time I visit.
