Five ways to incorporate mindfulness when you travel

Remember your last holiday? It might have been a whirlwind of packed schedules and a
race to tick off every landmark. You likely returned home with a camera full of photos but
feeling like you needed another holiday to recover. What if your travels could be different?
What if they could leave you feeling restored, connected, and truly enriched? This is the
essence of mindful travel. Read on to find out how you can incorporate mindfulness into your
next trip.

1. Slow down

It’s tempting to tick as many things off your list as possible when you travel, and
understandable why you’d want to. We want to make the most of our time away and not
miss out on any must-see sites. But there’s something to be said for slowing down. It can
lead to a calmer experience, and help you notice things that you might not have spotted
otherwise because you’re more present and focused. Research even suggests that when
we’re mindful during travel, we’re more likely to enjoy ourselves, according to a guide by
Original Travel.

2. Switch off from your everyday life

There’s a saying: “no matter where you go, there you are.” And it means that you can’t run
away from reality. But you can try to switch off, at least a little bit (easier said than done!).
Set yourself up for success by writing a clear handover at work, putting your out of office
message on and deleting any work-related apps, so you’re not tempted to check in while
you’re away. You could also set up app timers on your smartphone, so you can only use
certain ones for a specified amount of time.

3. Visit a destination known for wellness travel

It’s a lot easier to practice mindfulness when your destination is already known for its
approach to wellness. Luckily, the wellness travel sector is growing and there are plenty of
places to choose from, whether you want to spend time at a serene mountainside spa in
Switzerland or join a yoga retreat in Bali. Think about ways you’d like to incorporate
mindfulness into your trip, then find a place that offers what you want.

4. Find ways to immerse yourself in the local culture

Learning about new cultures is a significant part of travel and why many of us love it so
much, so look for ways you can immerse yourself. You could take part in a Japanese tea
ceremony
, for example, or join an Italian cooking class to learn from someone who’s been
using family recipes passed down through generations. Stay curious, ask questions, and get
deeper insight into the ways of life that are different from yours.

5. Take time to reflect

Instead of rushing from one thing to the next, take some time to think about the experience
you’ve just had. You could write notes on your phone, reflect on your thoughts out loud, or
simply sit quietly for a moment. Some people enjoy keeping a travel journal so they can look
back on their memories when they get home.

Mindful travel is a gentle shift in perspective. By choosing to slow your pace and step away
from daily life, you create space to savour the journey and open yourself up to a connection
with people and their culture. Choose presence over perfection, travel with intention, and
allow the world to unfold at its own beautiful pace.
