How to Plan the Perfect Group Trip (or Birthday Celebration) in Marrakech

If you’re planning a trip with your family and friends, or even a milestone birthday, and you have no idea where to go, let me make it easy for you: Marrakech.

I just planned an entire group trip and birthday celebration there, and I spent over 20 hours researching every single detail so you don’t have to. The villa, the private chef, the car rentals, the desert dinner, the custom cake, the caterer and decor, all of it.

This is the guide I wish I’d had before I started, and I’m giving it to you completely free.
Below you’ll find exactly how I planned it, the choices that made the trip, and every vendor and link you need to recreate it for your own group. Save this, send it to your group chat, and let’s plan your trip.

Why Marrakech for a Group Trip or Birthday

A few destinations just work for groups, and Marrakech is at the top of the list. Here’s why:

  • It feels like a five-star experience for a fraction of the price. Private villas, chefs, drivers, and luxury experiences cost a fraction of what you’d pay in most major destinations, which means you can do things as a group that would be out of reach almost anywhere else.
  • There’s something for everyone. Adventure (hot air balloons, the desert, quad biking), culture (the medina, palaces, souks), and pure rest (pool days, hammams, spa). Nobody in your group gets bored.
  • It’s incredibly photogenic. Every corner is content. For a birthday or milestone, the backdrops are unmatched.
  • It’s easier to get to than you think. Direct and one-stop flights connect Marrakech (airport code RAK) to most major cities in Europe, North America, and the Middle East.

Where to Stay: Book a Villa, Not a Hotel (and Not a Riad)

This is the single most important decision you’ll make, so I want to be clear about it.
Skip the hotels, and even the riads. Riads are those beautiful traditional houses built around a courtyard and yes, they’re stunning. But they sit inside the medina, the old walled city, which means they tend to be small, hard to access by car, and not ideal for a larger group that wants space to spread out.

Instead, we booked a private villa in a secure, gated area just outside the city center, and it was the best decision we made.

We stayed at the Infinity Mansion villa booked on Airbnb and it was absolutely gorgeous. It was big and beautiful with the most stunning pool and beautiful backdrop. Everything about the villa was well thought out and incredible. Perfect for a group trip.

It has five bedrooms so perfect for a group of 10-12 adults.

Tip: Book the villa first, before anything else. It anchors your budget and your whole vibe. And lock in your group with deposits before you confirm dates. You don’t want to commit to a villa and have people drop out.

Getting Around: Rent a Car

For transport, car rentals were the best decision we made. The flexibility was priceless. Getting around, restaurants across the city, day trips, and grocery runs all on our own schedule, without waiting on taxis or coordinating drivers every time. The only thing we had to pay for was parking which is usually around $10 for a 6 hour parking trip or even just offering a tip to someone nearby.

Car rental company: Omar. Phone number on WhatsApp. You’ll need to have your drivers license to rent a car in Marrakech. We booked two big vans and that was perfect for our group of 14 with children and car seats.

Heads up: Marrakech driving has its own rhythm. Confident, busy, lots of scooters. Have a comfortable driver in your group, make sure your villa has easy parking, and you’ll be completely fine. Just watch out for pedestrians and cyclists. You need total concentration driving in Marrakech.

The Itinerary: What to Actually Do

This itinerary I created was a 10 out of 10. It was a mix of relaxation and exploration, especially because we had infants and children traveling with us. Mix and match based on your group, but here’s everything we loved.

Sunrise Hot Air Balloon Ride
Floating over the landscape as the sun comes up is the kind of experience your whole group will be talking about for years. Book it for early in your trip. Depending on when you travel to Marrakech, it can be weather dependent so I recommend scheduling it in early in your trip in case of cancellations. We went at the end of May and it was completely fine.

Sunset Dinner in the Agafay Desert
About 40 minutes from the city, the Agafay is a rocky, golden desert that feels worlds away. We had dinner at a desert camp and watched the sun set over the dunes, easily one of the most magical evenings of the trip and perfect for a group. We also rode camels along the desert which was such a wonderful experience.

Exploring the Medina & Souks
The medina is the heart of Marrakech. The souks (markets) are full of lanterns, leather, rugs, spices, and ceramics. Go in the morning before it gets too hot and crowded, agree on a meeting point with your group, and remember: haggling is expected. Start at about half the asking price and meet in the middle.

Must-see spots

I recommend seeing places like the YSL museum, Jardin Majorelle, etc. Add in stops to Ben Youssef and Koutoubia Mosque also. We didn’t get a tour guide for these places as we just bought our entry tickets and saw it at our own pace. I will add a link for a combo ticket to YSL and Majorelle below.

Restaurants to try

The best part about Marrakech really is the food scene. There are thousands of restaurants, bars, rooftops in that city, it’s hard to just choose one but here are a few that stood out and I recommend. Some of them even have shows at night that really highlight the rich culture of the city.

  • OTTO Marrakech – Great rooftop bar with nice jazz music and lovely cocktails. Perfect for a night out.
  • Leopard Restaurant – My favourite in Marrakech for the vibes, EXCELLENT food and that night show will get you on your feet dancing away.
  • Saffron by Koya
  • Lily Billy – A wonderful brunch spot if you want to have breakfast or brunch with your group.

Pool Days at the Villa
Don’t over-schedule. Some of the best moments were just the whole group around the villa pool. Build in downtime, play some games. It’s a vacation, not a checklist.

The Birthday Setup: Vendors That Made It Special

For my birthday, I brought in the most incredible local vendors for a custom cake, canapés, food and decor right at the villa, and it turned out unreal. A balloon installation by the pool, a styled lunch table, the whole thing. This is where Marrakech really shines: the talent is exceptional and the cost is a fraction of what you’d pay back home.

If you’re celebrating a birthday, anniversary, or any milestone, here’s exactly who I used:

  1. Custom Cake: Cake by Na. WhatsApp. Instagram. For a bento cake, she charged about 700 dirhams which I thought was really reasonable. +212 663-841675. Gosh! The cake was absolutely delicious.
  2. Decor, tablescape and Balloon Styling. The team at Koltara Events did a fantastic job beyond what I could have imagined. It cost about 10000 MAD and it was totally worth it.
  3. Canape table. Dinart Marrakech. I got canapés and small bites for all 10 of us and it cost about 4000 MAD. Reach out to them on WhatsApp. +212 707-797655
  4. Bouncy castle. Yes, I got bouncy castles for my birthday and it sparked so much joy. I used Organim Events and it cost 2000 MAD for a three-hour rental. Reach out to them on WhatsApp. +212 662-075838
  5. More food. I got some asian cuisine as part of the food for the group. So delicious. You can just order packs of food for your group and have it delivered. Just make sure to have cash on hand. +212 773-073195 D-delice Thai.

Tip: Reach out to these vendors a few weeks ahead and share a color palette or inspiration and any dietary concerns you may have.

Practical Tips Before You Go

  • Best time to visit: Spring (roughly March–May) and fall (September–November) have the most comfortable weather. Summer is very hot; winter evenings get cool.
  • Currency: The Moroccan dirham (MAD). It’s a cash-friendly culture, especially in the souks. Carry small bills for markets and tips.
  • What to pack: Breathable layers, comfortable walking shoes for the medina, sun protection, and something a little elevated for dinners and your celebration night.
  • Connectivity: Grab a local SIM or eSIM on arrival so your group can stay in touch. I love using Airalo to stay connected while traveling around the world.
  • Respect the culture: Modest dress is appreciated in the medina and at religious sites; always ask before photographing people.
