A Travel Guide to Los Cabos, Mexico: Things to Do, See, Experience

Los Cabos is one of my favorite destinations in Mexico, and after visiting three times, I can confidently say it’s a place worth returning to. The mix of luxury, adventure, and stunning landscapes makes it a top-tier getaway. Whether you’re visiting for the first time or planning another trip, here’s everything you need to know about Los Cabos, including the best things to do, where to stay, and what to know before you go.

How I got to Los Cabos

I flew with Aeromexico from Toronto, with a short layover in Mexico City. The flight was smooth, and the connection in Mexico City was easy to navigate. There are also direct flights available from several major cities, making Cabo a convenient destination to reach.

Best Things to Do in Los Cabos

1. Take a Boat Cruise

A boat cruise is a must when visiting Cabo. Whether you opt for a private yacht or a shared catamaran tour, you will get breathtaking views of the famous Arch of Cabo San Lucas, Lover’s Beach, and the stunning coastline. Sunset cruises are especially magical.

Personally, my friend and I rented a private yacht and I cannot recommend it enough. We booked it via Viator and you can find the direct link to book below.

2. Breakfast at Casasola Café

For a delicious and laid-back breakfast experience, Casasola Café is my top recommendation. The food is fresh, the coffee is excellent, and the ambiance is perfect for a relaxed morning in Cabo.

3. Experience the Nightlife at El Squid Roe

If you are in the mood for a wild night out, El Squid Roe is an iconic Cabo party spot. It is lively, fun, and a little chaotic but in the best way possible. Expect great music, dancing, and an electric atmosphere.

Note: We booked a table here so we didn’t need to pay an entry fee. I believe it was a minimum drink spend of $300. However, there is entry allowed for $45 and you wouldn’t have a designated section.

4. ATV Ride and Tequila Tasting

For thrill-seekers, an ATV ride through the Baja desert is an unforgettable adventure. Many tours combine this experience with a tequila tasting, where you can sample some of Mexico’s finest spirits. It is the perfect blend of adrenaline and culture. We did the ATV ride with the Tequila tasting and a buffet lunch. The buffet actually tasted so good and it was overall a great activity. Also adding the direct link below.

5. Beach Day at Tamara Beach Club

If you are looking for a relaxing beach day, Tamara Beach Club is the spot. It is family-friendly and offers a laid-back vibe, unlike some of the more party-heavy beach clubs like Taboo. You can enjoy good food, drinks, and a beautiful oceanfront setting.

Tamara Beach Club didn’t have an entry fee but you had to spend about a minimum 8,000MXN on food and drinks to be able to sit on a beach bed and enjoy the beach. It worked quite well for the group as we ate more than that and the food and drinks were actually fantastic. Definitely recommend.

6. Dinner at Craft Cabo

Craft Cabo is one of my favorite dinner spots in Los Cabos. The food is incredible, and the atmosphere is perfect for a nice evening out. If you love great flavors and a well-curated dining experience, this place will not disappoint.

Note that I did LOVE the food here but the service was pretty slow. I still recommend visiting as it is a really nice ambience and great tasting food but something to keep in mind. Maybe have a little snack before going. And also, it could have just been a one-off experience.

Things to Know Before You Go

1. Renting a Car is a Must

If you are traveling with a group or planning to explore beyond your resort, renting a car will save you a lot of money. Cabo’s attractions are spread out, and having a car makes getting around much easier and more affordable than relying on taxis.

2. Plan Early, Cabo Can Be Expensive

Los Cabos is known for its high-end resorts, restaurants, and excursions. Prices can add up quickly, so planning your budget ahead of time and booking accommodations and activities early can help save money.

3. Uber Works in Cabo and is Cheaper than Taxis

Unlike some other destinations in Mexico where Uber is restricted, it works well in Cabo. It is a much more affordable alternative to local taxis, which tend to be overpriced for tourists.

4. Watch Out for the Currency Confusion

The official currency in Mexico is the Mexican Peso (MXN), but prices are sometimes displayed with just a dollar sign, which can be confusing for travelers from the U.S. Always double-check if a price is in MXN or USD before making a purchase.

5. The Best Time to Visit Cabo

The weather in Cabo is great all year round, but it can get chilly at night. I have always visited between January and May and never had bad weather. This is one of the best times to visit, as you will experience warm, sunny days without extreme heat or storms.

6. Expect Strong Waves and Currents

While Cabo has beautiful beaches, not all of them are swimmable due to strong waves and currents. Always check whether a beach is safe for swimming before jumping in.

7. Airport Transfers are Pricey

The airport is about 30 to 45 minutes from the main tourist areas, and private transfers can be costly. Shared shuttles or pre-booked transportation services are more budget-friendly options.

What to Pack for Cabo

  • Lightweight Clothing â€“ It is warm during the day, so pack breezy outfits, sundresses, and shorts.
  • A Light Jacket or Sweater â€“ Nights can get chilly, so bring something to layer up.
  • Swimwear â€“ Pack multiple swimsuits if you plan on spending time at the beach or pools.
  • Sunscreen â€“ The sun is strong in Cabo, so high-SPF sunscreen is a must.
  • Sandals and Comfortable Walking Shoes â€“ Great for exploring the town and heading to the beach.
  • Sunglasses and a Hat â€“ Essential for sun protection.
  • A Reusable Water Bottle â€“ Staying hydrated is key, especially in the heat.
  • A Waterproof Phone Case â€“ If you are planning on boat tours or beach activities, this will come in handy.
  • Cash in Pesos â€“ While many places accept cards, having some cash for tips and smaller vendors is useful.

Final Thoughts

Los Cabos is an incredible destination that has something for every type of traveler, whether you are looking for adventure, luxury, relaxation, or nightlife. I hope this guide helps you plan the perfect trip.
